Extending Optical Transport Networks (OTN) into Low Earth Orbit

Adapting ITU-T G.709 framing, open forward error correction (oFEC), and performance monitoring for spaceborne coherent optical networks.

The Shift from Best-Effort to Carrier-Grade

Early satellite networks treated orbital communications as best-effort IP networks, where packets suffered variable queuing delays and jitter. However, enterprise telecommunications carriers demand strict Service Level Agreements (SLAs), jitter guarantees, and deterministic bitpipes.

The Space OTN Solution

OISLNet adapts the telecom industry's Optical Transport Network (OTN) standard (ITU-T G.709) for spaceflight. By wrapping client data into standardized Optical Data Units (ODUflex) and applying advanced open Forward Error Correction (oFEC), the network guarantees transparent, deterministic transmission over inter-satellite laser links. ``` +-----------------------+ ITU-T G.709 OTU4 +-----------------------+ | 100GbE Client Stream | --------------------------------> | Spaceborne Micro-ROADM| | (Financial / Telco) | oFEC Encoding | Optical Lambda Bypass | +-----------------------+ +-----------------------+ | v Multi-Hop Space Backbone Sub-Nanosecond Jitter ```

Silicon Photonics ROADMs

Instead of converting optical photons back to electronic packets at every satellite hop, OISLNet utilizes radiation-hardened silicon photonics ROADMs. Lambdas pass directly through intermediate satellites at the speed of light, slashing power consumption and thermal dissipation on orbit.
